Dear Friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I let you know that my old dad, Russell Herrmann ’55, passed away on Thanksgiving morning in Naples, Florida. Russ passed peacefully after a week-long bout with pneumonia. His wonderful and courageous wife Patty and I were at his side as he closed his eyes for the last time at 11:25am.
A member of the Bowdoin Class of 1955, and the Hackley School Class of 1951, Russell was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and kept in regular contact with many of his classmates from Bowdoin until his final days. Russell spent 20+ years as co-owner of Anderson & Herrmann Wholesale Lumber of Melrose, MA, and later retired from Verizon. He was a dedicated member of the Lions Clubs of Magnolia, Mass, where he lived most of his life, and Marco Island, Florida where he retired.
Few people have had as many smiles generated in their midst over the course of an 80 year life as Russell did. Whether he inspired them or smiled them himself, Russell experienced a joy in living that will be cherished as his lasting memory. Russ brought me to Brunswick for a hockey game for the first time in 1969. He loved The College and would make regular trips up to visit classmates Al Stark and Chip Bartlett during the 70s and ’80s. He would later return to Bowdoin for his 30th Reunion on the weekend that I graduated with the class of 1985. Russell was an instant friend of anyone he’d meet and a generous contributor of service to any cause.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of sixteen years, Patricia “Patty” Ann Herrmann of Marco Island, FL; son, Todd Herrmann ’85 of Brunswick, ME; daughter, Laura (Christophe) Couallier of Apopka, FL; son, Craig (Kerry) Herrmann, of Gloucester, MA; and stepdaughter, Pamela Lutz, of Danvers, MA; as well as siblings, Janet Herrmann and Robert Herrmann, both of Winchester, MA; and Scott Herrmann of Nantucket, MA; and grandchildren, Jane and Ruby Herrmann, and Jesse Lutz.
Sincerely,
Todd Herrmann ’85
